For the last few months, power steering on my peugeot (307 SW, 2.0 turbo diesel) has been playing tricks on me. It stops working intermittently. When turning, I first start to feel a bit of shaking resistant in steering wheel and when it stops working, the whole steering is VERY hard.

There is a fuse box inside the engine compartment and underneath this fuse box is located a row of BIG fuses. The 70 Amp fuse for the pump is the number 8.

Hi Jo,the power steering is powered by the fanbelt and if its slipping will cause it to go heavy but a light would come up on the dash to tell you the alternator was not charging.so if not the belt,it could be the electrics for the pwr steering need looking into,this is easier to get on the dealers diagnostic computer which will show up the exact fault.and would save any guesswork.
